Maserati reveals new high-performance Trofeo line-up with Ghibli and Quattroporte joining Levante

Maserati has expanded its high-performance line-up by adding the Ghibli Trofeo and Quattroporte Trofeo to its range. The two new top-of-the-range models join an updated version of the Levante Trofeo SUV, which was the first to get the Trofeo treatment in 2018. The new Ghibli Trofeo and Quattroporte Trofeo are the fastest road production cars ever built by Maserati, both hitting a top speed of 203mph, while the larger Levante can reach a “mere” 188mph. Powering all three cars is a 3.8-litre, twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 572bhp and 528lb ft. Revised from the version used in the first Levante Trofeo, the engine is built in Ferrari’s Maranello plant to Maserati specifications. A version of the engine has previously been used in the Quattroporte GTS, which is being discontinued, but the Trofeo edition marks a significant 49bhp increase in power over that model. The new Trofeo edition marks the first time the engine has been used in the Ghibli, which until now has made do with a twin-turbo V6. In both saloons, all that power is directed to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, resulting in a 0-62mph time of 4.3 seconds for the Ghibli and 4.5 seconds for the larger Quattroporte. Befitting its SUV nature, the Levante features all-wheel-drive, as well as benefiting from a mechanical limited-slip differential. To ensure the saloons can handle the extra power, both have undergone overhauls of their chassis and Skyhook suspension, with special calibration for the continuously variable dampers. A new sharper Corsa driving mode, copied from the Levante, sits above the regular normal and sport modes. It lowers the air suspension further, speeds up gear changes and throttle response as well as opening the exhaust valves fully for the full Maserati sound experience. Trofeo models are distinguished from the rest of the Maserati range by some beefy exterior styling and Trofeo-specific interior details. All three Trofeo models get carbon fibre trim on the front and rear aero features, along with a piano black twin-bar version of the famous vertical grille. Red details on the side vents and the trident badge on the C-pillars also set the cars apart while the Ghibli also gets bonnet ducts like the Levante to aid engine cooling. Inside, the seats are finished in an exclusive Pieno Fiore natural leather and carry Trofeo logos on the headrests, and the driver is greeted by a unique Trofeo instrument interface at start-up. As with other Maserati models, the Trofeos get the 2021 model year upgrades, including a new 10.1-inch multimedia screen powered by Android Automotive and with the Maserati Connect online services. Wireless phone charging, smartphone mirroring, adaptive LED headlights are also standard, as are a suite of ADAS systems including adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, active blind spot assist, traffic sign recognition and active drive assist. The announcement comes just shortly after Maserati revealed its first hybrid model. While the Ghibli Trofeo gets a V8, the Ghibli hybrid makes do with a mild hybrid four-cylinder setup, which produces 325bhp, gets it to 62mph in just 5.7 seconds and on to a top speed of 158mph.
